Cytosorb Therapy is an advanced blood purification treatment designed to remove harmful inflammatory substances, known as cytokines, from the bloodstream. Cytokines are small proteins released by the immune system to fight infections and regulate inflammation. However, in severe conditions such as sepsis, severe infections, trauma, or major surgeries, the body may produce an excessive amount of cytokines, leading to a dangerous condition called a “cytokine storm.”
This overwhelming inflammatory response can cause widespread tissue damage, organ failure, and life-threatening complications. Cytosorb Therapy helps control this excessive immune reaction by filtering out the excess cytokines and other toxins from the blood, thereby stabilizing the patient’s condition.
Cytosorb Therapy works through a specially designed medical device that acts as a blood filter. During the procedure, blood is circulated through an extracorporeal circuit (outside the body) and passed through a cartridge containing highly porous polymer beads. These beads are engineered to adsorb and remove excess cytokines, toxins, and other harmful molecules from the blood.
The purified blood is then returned to the patient’s body, helping to restore a balanced immune response and reduce inflammation. The therapy is typically used for a specific duration, and in many cases, multiple sessions may be required depending on the severity of the condition.
